Imagine that there had been a long government history of mandatory church segregation. Now imagine that the government had a change of heart. Church segregation, everyone now agreed, was immoral. Besides, white churches often had superior facilities, heated baptistries, higher steeples, more stained glass windows, newer hymnbooks, bigger parking lots, and padded chairs instead of wooden pews. It was unfair for black people to attend churches with such inadequate resources. Thus, churches would now be integrated. But how would church integration come about? By forcing whites to attend black churches? No: in this story, one of the very premises of church integration was that white churches were superior, and that the religious training of black would improve if only they were admitted to white churches. And besides, few whites would want to attend black churches and be subject to leadership of black pastors. So then, imagine that state governments set about shutting down most of the black Baptist and AME churches and demolishing the church buildings. Imagine that most black churchgoers were forced to go to predominantly white churches scattered across town, in which the style of worship was different from that to which they were accustomed. Imagine that some of these white congregations protested or even rioted over the fact that a few blacks would be allowed in their presence. Imagine that the white churches often refused to give meaningful jobs to black ministers, and that they put many of the blacks in a separate Sunday school class.
